A look back at: Hydlide

Hydlide is exactly the kind of game that it is, a very simplistic action RPG.

That's all there is really to it. It's simple to a complete fault. There's virtually no plot at all, it's just save the girl and defeat the wizard and his dragon. The gameplay is so simplistic as to just running into enemies and watching the bars go down. Yes, monsters do reappear after awhile. Yes, some of the terrain is actually damaging. Thankfully it qualifies as an action RPG due to the stat increases provided. This also qualifies as the shortest RPG I have ever actually played, at least in theory, given how utterly simplistic it is.

Yet simplicity does not equal good. This game is often considered one of the worst games ever, at least for the NES version. I'm not sure about the rest of its sequels or remakes, but as simple as it is, this game really provides nothing super-substantial. Graphically, it's awful to look at too. I often wonder if gamers who played Hydlide back in the day just played it for a few minutes then left it to gather dust because of how lame it really was.
