A look back at Crystalis reveals that I still hold it in regards as one of the greatest action RPGs ever made.
There is simply a lot to this game, and that's what makes it good. For an action RPG, it takes in charging attacks, jumping, enemies, ailments, element properties, leveling up, spells, different swords, all of that into a nice little package. A package that is perfectly balanced. It does not go beyond the scope it has, and it sure doesn't crash and burn everywhere by not having what it needs to has. This game has great replay value too, making it truly worth it even though like any RPG plot you have a linear sense of direction. Perhaps the only thing I don't like about this game's gameplay is having to be a certain level to kill certain enemies. But at least actual level grinding isn't a total grind per se, and you max out at 16, so there's not a whole lot of work in truth for grinding.
Plot wise, despite the "rule of four" being into effect for both enemy generals and ally sages, it somehow manages to be interesting still. How many post-apocalyptic settings are there in early games before Chrono Trigger's 2300 AD? Of course, there's the cliche "get sword from old man" thing, but a number of other things happen. Having more than one mentor is quite good, as is dueling a guy to get a certain item. Riding on a dolphin was pretty neat, as is finding out the big bad just so happens to be a secret mentor (or something like that). While my memory of this game's plot is hazy, it's just, how should I say it, pretty nice. Nothing too fancy, but nothing too lame either.
For an NES game, you can't really go wrong here.
