A look back at: Crusader of Centy
Ah this game. Sega's answer to Zelda, oh wait just joking. Well it is a very Zelda-like game, and one I erroneously claimed was an RPG. But it's action-adventure in Zelda style, featuring animals everywhere, past and present time travel, oh, and there's Sonic the Hedgehog chilling on the beach in some sort of cameo.
I'm not really sure what to make of this game's plot, but at least it is unique in a way. You see this one hero guy often, but he's completely minor. You train with your new sword (that is throwable and a boomerang too), then get some spell cast on to you. Now you can only speak to animals! What the hell. There's a whole lot of silliness here, and your items are actually animal companions who join you, and you can have up to two with you. They are basically required or not required for many different puzzles, and most enemies you probably won't care that much for. Still, the boomerang sword thing is honestly pretty darn silly.
Perhaps the strongest thing about this game are the bosses. For a Genesis action-adventure game, these are some unique boss battles. The wire dude is a memorable annoying one, as is the one where you have to guess which of the enemies is the real one, otherwise you take damage. The boss rush at the end is also quite unique. Plenty of bosses for this actually short game provide the weirdest kind of challenges where they are actually enjoyable. Given how much of the gameplay isn't spent on killing regular enemies as much as it is avoiding traps and triggering switches, I find the bosses quite welcome.
Crusader of Centy is basically the Genesis version of Link to the Past, with unique boss fights and odd gameplay overall. It's story is hard to figure out though, much of it not making a whole lot of sense. So monsters are evil, or are they? And for the record, no one has been able to figure out who this Centy is, exactly. So there's the big minus there. It's so odd that its title doesn't really pertain to anything.
